There is one story about the image of the “Sleeping St. Joseph” that involves Pope Francis, who brought a statuette of this image from Argentina to keep near his room at St Martha’s House. It depicts the Saint dressed in gold trimmered dark green and red garments. Joseph is Lying down and asleep. This position is symbolic of the Gospel:it is always in his sleep that Jesus’s adoptive father receives messages from heaven about Mary and which name the Child should take and warnings about the danger Herod Represents, causing the flight into Egypt. Pope Francis writes prayer requests to the saint on a piece of paper and puts these underneath the statue.
